Synthetic turf is a great surfacing option for a playground. It looks great and when installed with padding underneath, it offers protection against falls up to 18 feet high. It requires little maintenance and looks great after many years of use. Some people have reservations about synthetic turf because of rubber infill, particularly on sports fields. Trassig does not use rubber crumbs; instead, we use rounded sand as infill. This is clean play sand that settles at the base of the weave, weighing the turf down and keeping the yarns vertical, which is the strongest position for the strands. It also keeps the turf system cooler, safer and prolongs its life.
Synthetic turf provides an aesthetically pleasing alternative to grass and areas where grass is difficult to grow. Also, it eliminates kids’ exposure to the harmful chemicals people often spray on grassy area for maintenance. The turf we use meets and exceeds all safety standards set by ASTM and CPSC, including toxicity and flammability standards.
Finally, compared to other types of surfaces, synthetic turf is budget-friendly due to its low maintenance, its high performance, and the fact that it is incredibly easy to patch in the event of vandalism. The only time it becomes costly is when it is installed on an irregularly-shaped area that has playground equipment with several footings. The cutting and seaming required makes the installation labor-intensive and increases the install price. Irregularly-shaped areas also create more wasted material; the turf comes in 15 feet wide rolls (much like a carpet). It has to be laid so that all the “blades” have the same nap, thus limiting the number of layout possibilities. When working with an area of multiples of 15 feet, there is less waste.
